THE REPUBLIC OF WEIMAR
The Inflation of 1919 - 1923
The Versaille peace treaty, which ended the war in 1918, forced Germany to enormous reparations. The extreme financial requirement of the first German republic could only be satisfied by money press. The result was rising prices up to the high inflation of autumn 1923 : the german inflation is documented in an outstanding way by the stamps showing the rising postal rates during this period.
